Plantech, a locally owned consulting engineering company, which offers specialist electrical, electronic and mechanical engineering services to a multitude of clients will be acquiring Nortelec, a specialised electrical and electronic consulting firm. The deal will be official as of 1 March 2020.

The members of Nortelec bring a wealth of experience to add to Plantech’s multidisciplinary service electrical and electronic offering to a diverse range of clients in the infrastructure, retail, commercial, industrial, educational and property development markets.

Nortelec joining Plantech has been in the pipeline for the last year and Herman Nortje will become a director of Plantech as from 1 March 2020. Herman will strengthen the current Plantech leadership through his more than 25 years of local and international experience as a Build Environment Professional.

Plantech has been in business for 38 years and is a Qualifying Small Enterprise with a 51% Black Ownership and 20 % Black Women Ownership and is a Level 2 B-BBEE Contributor.

Plantech has a documented quality control system as well as having ISO 9001:2015 certification.

Plantech offers a professional consulting engineering service in various disciplines to a multitude of clients.  Various electrical, mechanical and electronic engineering consulting services have been undertaken, one of which has been the Waterfall Corporate Campus. Phase 1, 2 and 3 have been completed already.  The entire project consists of the construction of an office park with 7 Office buildings, a Gate House, a Communal Conference Centre as well as a restaurant.

Services that were rendered on this product included MV and LV electrical design; internal and external Lighting; Fire Detection; CCTV and Access Control; Data Network Infrastructure as well as a 4 star green building design (there is a number of criteria that have to be designed into the overall concept and undertaken before a building receives 4 star green building status).

Phase 1 and 2 have received 4 star green building status.  As regards Phase 3, occupants are presently moving into the building and the application for 4 star green building status has been submitted to the Green Building Council for consideration.  Phase 4 of the project is currently under construction.

Lesotho Highlands Water Project

Lesotho Highlands Water Project

Plantech offers a professional consulting engineering service in various disciplines to a multitude of clients.  Various electrical engineering consulting services have been undertaken, one of which has been the Lesotho Highlands Water Project which covered 100MVA, 132kV Lesotho Highlands Water Scheme Phase 1B supply line over 50km which included the Mazinod / Mohale 132kV supply line for Dam Construction and Phase 2 which included the supply of 100MVA, 132kV Lesotho Highlands Water Scheme Phase 2 supply line over 40km which included the Matsoku / Polihali 132kV supply line and various other system upgrades.

Phase 1A included construction of the 185m-high double curvature concrete arch Katse Dam in the central Maluti Mountains and the 72MW Muela hydropower station. The dam has a storage capacity of 1,950 million m³ and a spillway discharge of 6,252m³/s. Phase 1A also involved building a 45km transfer tunnel and a 37km delivery tunnel.

The project involved construction of the 145m concrete-faced rock-fill Mohale Dam on the Senqunyane River.  The dam has a storage capacity of 958 million m³ and a spillway discharge of 2,600m³/s.  Additionally, a 32km interconnecting transfer tunnel between the Katse and Mohale reservoirs was also built. Phase 1B included construction of the 19m-high Matsoku Weir and a 6.4km transfer tunnel. Mohale Dam was inaugurated in 2004.

Phase II of the project included construction of the 165m high Polihali Dam in the Mokhotlong district. It will be a concrete faced rock fill dam (CFRD) with a capacity to hold 2.2 billion m3 of water. A 38km water transfer tunnel running will be constructed to connect Polihali with Katse Reservoir. The second phase also includes a 1,000MW pump storage system.

The head office, which is situated in Pretoria, employs more than 20 engineers, technicians and support personnel. Various electrical and mechanical engineering consulting services for office buildings have been undertaken by Plantech, one of which was Die Groenhuis office building in Pretoria.

The project which was completed in 2019 involved consulting services for the construction of the office building of ±1000m² which included a full ECSA Stage 1-6 scope of work for electrical services including electrical connections, lightning, small power, lightning protection, solar photovoltaic, and standby generator.  Also included were the electronic services of access control and CCTV.
